外国人のみなさん、新年あけましておめでとうございます。
このメルマガの発行者の一人、小田光男です。

今号は、新年特別号です。

１月３日、私と住田正則(夕映舎)は、京都市伏見区にある伏見稲荷大社（ふしみいなりたいしゃ）を訪れました。
伏見稲荷大社は、日本全国に無数にある稲荷神社（いなりじんじゃ）または「お稲荷さん（おいなりさん）」の本部に当たる神社です。
祭られている神は「稲荷（いなり）」という、稲の成長を守護すると言われる神です。稲荷の化身は狐であると言われていて、そのために稲荷神社の門の左右には狐の石造が置かれています。
稲は、言うまでもなく、日本の文化の中心にあり続けています。私たち日本人は、正月に米から作った餅（もち）を食べる習慣を持っています。稲の神である「稲荷」は、農業の神を超えて、幸運をもたらす神として、現在でも広く日本人に愛好され続けています。

お正月には、多くの人が伏見稲荷大社を訪れます。お正月に神社または寺院を訪れて、一年の幸福を祈願するのが、日本の伝統的習慣です。これが、「初詣（はつもうで）」です。

最初、私と住田は、神社の背後にそびえる稲荷山の山上まで登ろうと思っていました。稲荷山の山上までの道には、赤く塗った鳥居が連続して置かれています。これを、千本鳥居（せんぼんとりい）」と言います。山上にも神社があって、そこからは京都市街を見下ろすことができます。

しかし、写真のとおり、この日は初詣の客で、山上までの道までが非常に込み入っていました。
前に進むことも容易でなく、私たちは今日の登頂を断念しました。

私の今の住居は、伏見稲荷から遠くありません。
いずれ、日を改めて、山上までの道を登りたいと思います。

Everyone, a happy new year!
I am Oda Mitsuo, one of this newsletter’s publishers.
This is a new year issue.

On January 3rd I and Sumida Masanori of Yueisya visited Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社).
It is the top shrine of so many “Inari (稲荷)” shrines all around Japan. “Inari” is a deity who is a guardian of rice crop. Its avatar is a fox. So on the right and left side of the entrance of “Inari” shrines there are twin statues of foxes.
“Inari” is a guardian of rice crop, so Japanese peasants have revered it since ancient times. And rice crop is right on the center of Japanese culture, and a symbol of prosperity and fortune. So “Inari” has been also revered by all over statuses and occupations of Japanese people. In Oshogatsu (お正月), a new year holidays, Japanese people take mochi cake (餅) made from rice to celebrate a new year. Rice crop is essential for Japanese culture, and the popularity of “Inari” also continues to this day.

So many people visit this shrine in Oshogatsu to pray for their good fortunes of this year. To visit and pray in shrines or temples in Oshogatsu is Japanese tradition, that is called “Hatsumode (初詣)” .

At first I and Sumida planned to climb up through pillars of red Torii (鳥居) gates that lead to the peak of Inari Hill (稲荷山). This path is called “Senbon Torii (千本鳥居)” – one thousand torii gates. On top of Inari Hill there are also shrines, and from there Kyoto City can be seen.

But, as the picture shows, it was also so crowded that we could hardly advance.
So we gave up to climb Senbon Torii.

My residence is near Fushimi Inari, so there can be any chances for me to try again.
